American Rivers, Manheim Pennsylvania Host River Cleanup
Dedication for Manheim Auto Auction Exhibition Center Held; Volunteers Collected Over 800 Pounds of Litter, Debris from Creek Shoreline

MANHEIM, Pa., (Sept. 23, 2013) – As part of a national partnership with American Rivers, a group of more than 100 employees from Manheim Pennsylvania volunteered to collect more than 800 pounds of litter and debris along a half-mile stretch of Chiques Creek (pronounced Chickies) shoreline on Sept. 21. The group also beautified the grounds of the brand-new Manheim Auto Auction Exhibition Center.

“We are delighted to officially dedicate the new Manheim Auto Auction Exhibition Center, and participate in our third river cleanup project,” said Tim Van Dam, market vice president for the northeast market that includes Manheim Auto Auction in Manheim, Pa. “We care about the environment and our community. Today’s event allows our employees to once again get their feet wet, literally, in the fight to keep Chiques Creek clean, and help put the finishing touches on the new facility that will benefit the community.”

The volunteers spent two hours planting more than 100 plants and shrubs, spreading two truckloads full of mulch and picking up litter and debris, including old building materials, iron rods, tires, logs, and other debris this morning. Among the items collected, volunteers picked up a 35-foot long iron rod, wood building materials, three tires and 20 bags of debris weighing nearly 400 pounds.

The volunteers also installed landscaping, planted shrubs and trees, and spread mulch that beautified the exterior of the new Manheim Auto Auction Exhibition Center, located on East Adele Road about 1½ miles from Manheim Pennsylvania operating location. Plants were provided by the generosity of the Manheim Farm Show Committee in partnership with Cox Conserves and American Rivers.

The cleanup portion of the project is part of the “Go Green with Manheim,” the company’s sustainability project. “Go Green with Manheim,” falls under its parent company’s program called Cox Conserves, a national sustainability program led by Manheim's parent company – Cox Enterprises, Inc. American Rivers, a national river conservation organization, is a national partner of Cox Enterprises, Inc.

Volunteers like this group from Manheim Pennsylvania help American Rivers restore and protect rivers and clean water.

“We are proud to partner with Manheim today,” said Peter Roquemore, National River Cleanup Manager for American Rivers. “Manheim and its parent company, Cox Enterprises, are doing so much to help keep our rivers clean. Our organization could not restore and protect rivers and clean water without the dedication of volunteers like this Manheim group.”

The creek flows about two miles from the grounds of the auto remarketing facility, which is located at 1190 Lancaster Road in Manheim, and next to the new Manheim Auto Auction Exhibition Center. A dedication ceremony for the new community facility will be held prior to the volunteer event.

River cleanups are important because millions of tons of trash wind up in our nation’s rivers and streams each year due to litter and illegal dump sites. Trash is more than just an eyesore as it can contaminate drinking water and threaten the lives of all of us who depend on it.

Here are some facts about American rivers and their importance:

  • Almost every American lives within 1 mile of a river or stream.
  • The United States has more than 250,000 rivers, equaling 3.5 million miles of rivers.
  • More than 65% of Americans get their drinking water from rivers.
  • Healthy rivers provide quality drinking water, reliable water supply, healthy wildlife habitats and safe places for children to play.

Today’s cleanup event is part of the “Go Green with Manheim,” the company’s sustainability project. “Go Green with Manheim,” falls under its parent company’s program called Cox Conserves, a national sustainability program led by Manheim's parent company Cox Enterprises, Inc.

Launched in 2007, Cox Conserves seeks to reduce Cox Enterprises' energy consumption by embracing renewable forms of energy, conserving natural resources and inspiring eco-friendly behavior. The program engages each of the company's major subsidiaries: Cox Communications, Manheim, Cox Media Group and AutoTrader.com.
